The content marketing strategies for asset management firms that hold up in 2026 run through four gates: specialist pages that rank in classic search, passages that AI answers can cite, third-party coverage that consultants and advisors trust, and a recorded sales action on the firms that respond. Each gate has its own evidence, and every claim must clear SEC, FINRA or FCA marketing rules before it ships.

Content Marketing Strategies for Asset Management Firms: The Short Answer

  • Specialization is what the content has to prove. In Cerulli's 2023 institutional research, asset owners named specialization in asset classes (99%), "demonstration of strong expertise through thought leadership" (90%) and a well-known brand (85%) as important when placing a mandate. Content is the evidence for the first two; volume is not on the list.
  • The rulebook is the binding constraint, not the editorial calendar. Under the SEC Marketing Rule, an adviser's advertisement may not include "a material statement of fact that the adviser does not have a reasonable basis for believing it will be able to substantiate upon demand by the Commission", gross performance must sit next to net performance, and copies of each advertisement must be kept for five years. Plan the review and the records first.
  • AI search adds no separate technical checklist on Google. Google states that a page needs to be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with "no additional technical requirements". ChatGPT search depends on allowing OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler. Bing says the same SEO fundamentals support its grounding results and citations.
  • Measure each gate with its own record, and never add them together. Search Console reports search and AI-feature impressions, Bing reports citations, ChatGPT referrals carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, and the CRM records meetings, consultant requests and searches. Only the last one is revenue evidence.

The Four-Gate Content Chain: the decision framework

The chain below is this guide's model. Each gate answers one question and has one record that proves it passed. A piece of content does not need to pass all four, but a programme that funds gate 3 while gate 1 is broken pays for coverage that points at pages nobody can find.

Gate Question it answers Content that serves it Rule check before publishing Record that proves it What the record cannot prove
1. Search visibility Can an advisor, consultant or investor find the firm's view on a topic they search for? One indexable page per strategy and per recurring client question, with the answer in text rather than only in a PDF or video Is this page an advertisement under the rules that apply to the firm? If yes, it goes through the same review as any other advertisement Search Console impressions and clicks by page Who searched, or whether they could ever allocate
2. AI citation When someone asks an AI assistant the question, is the firm's page one of the sources? A direct, self-contained answer near the top; facts with their dates and sources; risk disclosures next to the claims they qualify Would the passage still be fair and balanced if quoted on its own, without the rest of the page? Bing AI Performance citations; Search Console's generative AI report; utm_source=chatgpt.com sessions That the answer described the firm accurately, or how often anyone asked the question
3. Authority Do sources that consultants, advisors and AI systems already trust name the firm as a specialist? Bylined articles in trade and financial press, original data studies, conference talks published as text, podcast transcripts Third-party ratings, awards, testimonials and paid endorsements each carry their own disclosure conditions Placements, links and unlinked mentions; referral sessions from those placements That a placement caused a mandate
4. Revenue action Did a named firm or person do something a salesperson can act on? Pieces built for a sales step: a strategy explainer a wholesaler can send, a due diligence summary, a consultant briefing Content sent one to one may fall under different rules from published content; check which CRM records: meetings booked, consultant or platform requests, search or RFP inclusion, funded accounts Why the firm chose you

Which gate to fund first

Read the gates from the bottom of the chain upwards, then fund the first gate that fails.

  1. No CRM record ties any meeting or request to a content topic. Start at gate 4 even if traffic is healthy: add a landing-page or "content referenced" field to the meeting and opportunity records, and agree what counts as a revenue action. Without it, the other three gates cannot be judged.
  2. The firm's strategy pages do not appear in Search Console for the questions buyers ask. Fix gate 1. Check that the pages are indexable, have one canonical URL each and carry their main content as text.
  3. The pages rank, but AI answers cite competitors or trade publications instead. Work on gates 2 and 3 together: tighten the direct answers on the page, and earn coverage in the publications that the answers cite.
  4. The firm is cited, but nothing arrives in the CRM. Go back to gate 4: the cited page probably has no next step for a professional buyer, or the sales team is not told which firms read it.

The Audience–Rule Map

Asset managers sell to at least three audiences, and the same paragraph can fall under different rules depending on who receives it and which registered entity distributes it. The map below is a starting point for the compliance conversation, drawn from the rule texts in the Sources; it is not legal advice, and firms registered in several places need counsel to map their own case.

Audience Who reads the content Rule set to check first Review requirement in the rule text Content that serves this audience
Institutional: asset owners and investment consultants CIOs, pension and endowment staff, consultant researchers SEC Marketing Rule for an SEC-registered adviser; FINRA Rule 2210 institutional communications if a broker-dealer distributes them FINRA: written procedures for principal review of institutional communications Strategy-level research, specialist commentary, data studies, webinar recordings with transcripts
Intermediary: financial advisors, RIAs, wealth platforms Advisors choosing funds or separate accounts for their clients SEC Marketing Rule for the adviser; FINRA Rule 2210 for broker-dealer communications FINRA: a member may not treat a communication as institutional if it has "reason to believe" any excerpt will reach retail investors, so pieces built for advisors to pass on are reviewed as retail communications, which a registered principal approves before the earlier of use or filing Short explainers an advisor can reuse, model portfolio commentary, practice-management content
Retail fund investors (US) Individual investors researching a fund FINRA Rule 2210 retail communications Retail communications promoting a specific registered fund are filed with FINRA within 10 business days of first use; some, such as those with certain performance rankings or comparisons, must be filed at least 10 business days before Fund education, plain-language explainers, risk and fee explanations
UK clients and consumers Any audience of an FCA-authorised firm FCA anti-greenwashing rule for sustainability claims (in force for all authorised firms from 31 May 2024) Sustainability-related claims must be "fair, clear and not misleading" ESG and stewardship content that can be traced to fund documents and data

Evidence table: what each source proves

The first table lists the sources this guide relies on, grouped by evidence class: a rule text binds the firm, an enforcement action shows how a regulator applied the rules, a platform document describes how a search or AI product says it works, an industry survey reports what buyers and managers said, and a public register lists firms. The classes carry different weight, and none of them measures your own results.

Source (date shown) Evidence class What it establishes What it does not establish
Cerulli Associates, institutional marketing press release (September 21, 2023) Industry survey and review of the top 30 institutional managers by AUM Asset owners rate specialization (99%), thought leadership (90%) and brand (85%) as important in mandate decisions; 83% of the top 30 host audio or visual content, 76% promote webinars, 40% offer podcasts; LinkedIn is used by all 30 That any format wins mandates, or what the full report's sample was (the release does not give it)
SEC Marketing Rule, 17 CFR 275.206(4)-1 (effective May 4, 2021; compliance date November 4, 2022) Rule text Seven general prohibitions; conditions for testimonials, endorsements and third-party ratings; net performance next to gross; 1-, 5- and 10-year periods for portfolios other than private funds Whether a particular commentary or post is an advertisement; that depends on what it offers and to whom
SEC Rule 204-2(a)(11), (a)(16) and (e)(3) Rule text Advisers keep a copy of each advertisement and the records behind performance shown in it, for five years from the end of the fiscal year in which it was last disseminated How a firm should store web pages or AI-quoted passages; the rule names the record, not the system
FINRA Rule 2210 Rule text Definitions of correspondence (25 or fewer retail investors in 30 days), retail and institutional communications; principal approval; filing deadlines Anything about SEC-registered advisers that are not FINRA members
SEC press release 2024-36 (March 18, 2024) Enforcement action Two advisers settled charges over false statements about their use of AI on websites, in filings, in a press release and on social media; $400,000 in total civil penalties That every AI claim is risky; the orders concern claims the firms could not support
FCA FG24/3, anti-greenwashing guidance (first published April 23, 2024; last updated June 5, 2026) Regulator guidance All authorised firms must meet the anti-greenwashing rule from 31 May 2024; sustainability claims must be fair, clear and not misleading The US position, or rules for non-sustainability claims
Google Search Central, AI features and your website (last updated December 10, 2025) Platform document Eligibility for AI Overviews and AI Mode = indexed and snippet-eligible; AI feature traffic is counted in the Performance report's Web search type; nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit what is shown How Google picks which eligible page to cite
Google Search Central, creating helpful, reliable, people-first content Platform document Trust is the most important part of E-E-A-T, and Google's systems give "even more weight" to strong E-E-A-T on "Your Money or Your Life" topics, which include financial stability A ranking formula; the page describes aims, not weights
Search Console Help, generative AI performance report Platform document Impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date Clicks or queries for those features
Bing Webmaster Guidelines and Bing AI Performance help Platform document Bing and Copilot use the same crawling, indexing and ranking foundation; AI Performance reports citations, cited pages and grounding queries across Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partners Cause: Bing says citation trends "cannot be attributed to a specific cause or event"
OpenAI, Overview of OpenAI Crawlers, and Publishers and Developers FAQ Platform document Sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers"; ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs What share of ChatGPT use involves search, or how sources are chosen
SEC, Information About Registered Investment Advisers and Exempt Reporting Advisers Public register The SEC publishes spreadsheet reports built from Form ADV filings, and IAPD shows each adviser's latest Form ADV Who at the firm chooses outside managers; Form ADV describes the firm, not its buying process

What the pages ranking for this phrase answer and miss

The second table covers the top five organic results for "content marketing strategies for asset management firms" in mid-October 2026, plus 6sense's asset management marketing page. Google's AI Mode answer for the phrase drew on Edgefolio, Select Advisors Institute, Sondhelm Partners, Cerulli, Peregrine Communications and a Capital Group article written for financial advisors marketing their own practices.

# Page (date shown) What it answers What it misses What it proves or cites
1 Sondhelm Partners, The Definitive Guide to Content Marketing for Asset Managers (August 27, 2025) A full programme: strategy, audiences, storytelling, SEO basics, distribution; treats compliance as a partner and names SEC, FINRA and accessibility rules What those rules require of a piece of content; AI answers; how content reaches a sales record A HubSpot consumer statistic (76% of consumers) that is not specific to asset management; one of its own older posts as an evergreen example
2 Select Advisors Institute, Asset Management Content Marketing: A Simple Plan That Supports Sales (October 2026) A plan tied to sales: content wholesalers can send, compliance built into the workflow, and measures including meetings booked, wholesaler use, pipeline movement and assets Rule specifics; AI search; how a meeting is attributed to a piece No external sources; the firm's own description of its services and a client testimonial
3 Fundamental Media, The development of content marketing in asset management between 2020 and 2024 (May 2, 2025) History of formats, budgets and challenges, including compliance review as a bottleneck and the difficulty of measuring ROI What to do next; AI search Statistics attributed to BackBay Communications and the Gramercy Institute, plus a 2017 figure, without links to the original studies in the article text
4 Edgefolio, Essential content marketing strategies for asset managers (May 8, 2019) Thought leadership formats with examples from large managers; hedge fund focus Predates the current SEC Marketing Rule and AI search Links to the example managers' channels
5 Financial Marketer, Cheat sheet: content marketing for asset managers (August 23, 2022) A list of content types and why variety matters Rules, measurement and AI search A pull quote claiming 70% of asset managers have little or no content strategy, with no original source named; this guide does not use it
— 6sense, Comprehensive Wealth Management Marketing Guide, served at its asset management marketing strategy URL (March 14, 2025) Planning steps (research, audience, objectives, channel mix, budget) and an asset management section that recommends highlighting strategies, risk management and "track record for delivering strong returns" That a track-record claim in an adviser's advertisement triggers the Marketing Rule's performance conditions A customer story reporting a 262% sales increase and a 528% increase in client lifetime value, reported by the vendor

None of the six pages names a rule section, OAI-SearchBot, the ChatGPT referral parameter or the Search Console and Bing reports for AI features. Select Advisors is the only one that defines success as a sales event. That gap is what the Four-Gate Content Chain and the Audience–Rule Map are built to fill.

Fact, inference and our view

Statement Type Basis
Asset owners rate specialization and thought leadership as important when placing mandates Fact (survey) Cerulli, 2023
Gross performance in an adviser's advertisement must be shown with net performance Fact (rule text) 17 CFR 275.206(4)-1(d)(1)
A page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to be a supporting link in Google's AI features Fact (platform document) Google Search Central
An AI answer that quotes a performance figure without its disclosure creates a fair-and-balanced problem for the firm's page Inference The rule's general prohibitions apply to the advertisement; AI products quote passages, not whole pages
Placing disclosures next to the claims they qualify, rather than in a footer or a data-nosnippet block, makes a quoted passage safer Our view Follows from the inference above; no regulator has said this
Fund gate 4 records before gates 2 and 3 Our view Without a CRM record, no other gate can be judged against revenue

How to put the chain in place

The sequence below is this guide's recommended order. Steps 1 and 2 cost staff time, not budget.

  1. Write the Audience–Rule Map and agree it with compliance. List each audience, the registered entity that will distribute content to it, and the rule set and review step that applies. Decide in advance which recurring formats (weekly commentary, strategy pages, webinar transcripts) count as advertisements under the SEC definition: a communication to more than one person that "offers the investment adviser's investment advisory services with regard to securities" to prospective clients or private fund investors. Extemporaneous, live, oral communications are outside that definition; a recording or transcript you publish afterwards is no longer live, so route it through written review.
  2. Start a Claim Ledger. For every factual claim a piece makes, record the claim, its source, the substantiation file, the reviewer, the date approved and the rule it was checked against. The Marketing Rule's substantiation test ("upon demand by the Commission") and Rule 204-2's record requirement are the reason; the ledger also lets you update every page that repeats a claim when the underlying number changes. The ledger is this guide's device, not a regulatory form.
  3. Choose topics from questions, one owning page each. Collect the questions consultants, advisors and investors ask in meetings and RFPs, and assign each to one page. Specialization is what asset owners say they weigh, so a page per strategy and per recurring question (for example, how a short-duration strategy behaves when rates fall) serves gate 1 better than a stream of general market notes.
  4. Build gate 1 into the page template. Each page needs a canonical URL, indexable status, internal links from the strategy and insights hubs, and its main content as HTML text. Google's AI features page lists "making sure that important content is available in textual form" among its SEO fundamentals; a commentary published only as a PDF or a video leaves that to chance. Submit new and changed URLs to Bing through IndexNow and keep sitemap lastmod values accurate, as Bing's guidelines recommend.
  5. Write for gate 2 at the paragraph level. Open each page with a direct answer that stands on its own. Put dates on facts. Put each performance figure, its net equivalent and its time periods in the same paragraph or table, so a quoted passage carries them together. Make sure robots.txt and any CDN or bot-management rule let OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot and Bingbot through; OpenAI says a site opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  6. Earn gate 3 in the places your buyers read. Offer original data and named specialists to the trade press, consultants' publications and industry podcasts that cover your asset class, and publish talk transcripts on your own site. If you cite a ranking, award or rating, the Marketing Rule's third-party rating conditions apply; if you quote a client or pay anyone to recommend you, the testimonial and endorsement conditions apply.
  7. Wire gate 4 before you report anything. In GA4, filter sessions by utm_source=chatgpt.com and by referral sources from the publications in step 6, broken down by landing page. In the CRM, record on each meeting, consultant request, search inclusion or platform approval the content the buyer referenced, if any. Report each gate separately each month.

A worked example

Halvergate Capital is invented for this guide, as are its pages and every number below. It is an SEC-registered adviser running municipal bond separate accounts, sold mainly through RIAs, with no affiliated broker-dealer.

  • Claim Ledger catches two problems before launch. A draft strategy page says the strategy is "top decile over five years" and shows a gross return chart. The ledger flags the first as a third-party rating that needs the rating provider's identity and the date of the rating, and the second as gross performance without net. Compliance adds both, plus the 1-, 5- and 10-year periods.
  • Gate 1 after the first quarter. Search Console shows the strategy page and three question pages receiving impressions for advisor searches about municipal ladders; one question page is not indexed because it was published as a PDF only. The team republishes it as HTML.
  • Gate 2. Bing's AI Performance report shows 9 citations of the question pages over the quarter, and GA4 shows 14 sessions with utm_source=chatgpt.com. The team does not add these to the search numbers.
  • Gate 3. One bylined article in an advisor trade publication links to the strategy page and sends 31 referral sessions.
  • Gate 4. The CRM shows 4 meetings with RIAs where the advisor mentioned a specific page, 2 of them after the trade article. One RIA asks for the due diligence questionnaire.

The quarter's report has four lines, one per gate. It does not have a combined "content score", because impressions, citations, sessions and meetings measure different things.

When the plan should change: firm type, audience and jurisdiction

  • Private fund managers. The Marketing Rule's 1-, 5- and 10-year presentation requirement applies to portfolios "other than any private fund", but the general prohibitions, the net-with-gross requirement and the hypothetical performance conditions still apply. Private fund offerings carry their own securities-law limits, so have counsel confirm which pages can be public.
  • Managers whose funds are sold through a broker-dealer. FINRA Rule 2210 adds principal approval and, for retail communications promoting a registered fund, filing within 10 business days of first use. That review time belongs in the publishing calendar, which matters most for market-reaction commentary.
  • UK and other jurisdictions. The FCA's anti-greenwashing rule covers sustainability claims by all authorised firms, and other markets have their own fund-marketing rules. A global insights hub needs a jurisdiction rule per page, not one disclaimer for all.
  • Claims about AI in the investment process. In March 2024 the SEC settled charges against two advisers over AI claims they could not support, including statements on their websites and social media. Treat any description of AI use as a factual claim that goes into the Claim Ledger.
  • Small marketing teams. A two-person team cannot run four gates at once. Fund the first failing gate, and publish less often rather than skip review; Select Advisors makes the same point about choosing a pace "your team and compliance process can keep up with".
  • Measurement limits. Search Console's generative AI report counts impressions, not clicks. Bing describes its AI citation data as a sample and says trends cannot be attributed to a single cause. The ChatGPT parameter only tags referrals that keep it. Many institutional decisions run through consultants and meetings that leave no web trace, so gate 4 depends on salespeople recording what the buyer referenced.
  • No one can guarantee an AI citation. Google says specific optimisation "isn't required" for its AI features and that existing SEO fundamentals still apply. An agency or tool that promises citations for a regulated firm is selling an outcome no platform offers.

Where Lead Seeker, Percepture and Pyra fit

Lead Seeker publishes this guide; its author leads Percepture, and Prime AI Visibility is a related company.

For gates 1 to 3, Percepture's organic SEO services guide covers the classic search work the chain starts with, and its GEO services page lists "structured content + schema + PR citations" and reporting on "mentions, sentiment, and referral traffic from AI platforms"; its AI search package is listed from $3,500 a month on its pricing page. Its guide to choosing an AI search monitoring platform explains how to keep the answer and its observation context for review, which is the same discipline the Claim Ledger asks for. Prime AI Visibility saves the answers ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini give to the questions your buyers ask and compares repeat checks; it describes its topic guide as "not a promised ranking or AI citation". For an unaffiliated view, Bing's AI Performance report and Search Console's generative AI report cover your own site at no cost.

For gate 4, Lead Seeker works on the step after a topic shows demand. Lead Compass "uses your company website, ICP, and intent themes to surface opportunity picks, cite public sources where available, and generate ready-to-run search prompts". A search returns verified people in the roles you describe at the firms you choose, such as RIAs or consultants in a region, with the public signal that surfaced each one. It does not identify anonymous website visitors or measure AI visibility. Pyra describes itself as "an AI agent platform that builds and runs agents for real job workflows", including marketing and operations; a team that wants the monthly gate report or the Claim Ledger reminders handed to an agent can scope that with Pyra.

For the neighbouring decisions, the Four Evidence Classes for joining AI visibility data to revenue go deeper on gate 2 and gate 4 measurement, the Four Bridges that turn a digital PR placement into a B2B lead cover gate 3, and the Pipeline Evidence Chain for judging B2B SEO agencies helps when gate 1 is outsourced.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of content work best for asset managers?

Cerulli's 2023 research found that asset owners value specialization and thought leadership when placing mandates, and that the top 30 institutional managers by assets widely use audio and visual content, webinars and LinkedIn. No source read for this guide shows one format winning more mandates than another. Choose formats by audience and sales step: strategy pages and research for consultants, short reusable explainers for advisors, plain-language fund education for retail investors, each published as indexable text.

Does the SEC Marketing Rule apply to blog posts and market commentary?

It applies to any advertisement, which the rule defines as a communication to more than one person that offers the adviser's investment advisory services with regard to securities to prospective clients or private fund investors, or offers new services to existing ones. Whether a commentary meets that definition depends on what it says and how it is presented, so the decision belongs to the firm's compliance team. Commentary that discusses a strategy, its holdings or its performance is the case most likely to be in scope.

How do asset managers get cited in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews?

Start with eligibility: Google requires a page to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and OpenAI ties appearing in ChatGPT search to its OAI-SearchBot crawler. Then give the systems something worth citing: a direct answer near the top of the page, dated facts, named sources and specialist depth on one topic per page. Coverage in publications that AI answers already cite helps. Track results in Bing's AI Performance report, Search Console's generative AI report and GA4 sessions with utm_source=chatgpt.com.

How should an asset manager measure content marketing ROI?

Measure each stage with its own record instead of one blended number: search impressions and clicks by page, AI citations and AI referral sessions, placements and their referral traffic, and CRM records such as meetings booked, consultant requests, search inclusions and funded accounts. Ask salespeople to record which piece a buyer referenced. Revenue claims should rest on the CRM records; the other numbers show whether the content is being found.

Can asset managers use client testimonials in their content?

Under the SEC Marketing Rule, yes, if the conditions are met. The advertisement must disclose whether the person is a current client, whether they were paid and any material conflicts; the adviser must oversee compliance; and paid promoters need a written agreement unless the payment is $1,000 or less over 12 months. Some people with disciplinary history cannot be paid for testimonials. FINRA-member broker-dealers and firms in other jurisdictions have their own rules.

Can an asset manager say it uses AI in its investment process?

Only if the claim is accurate and can be substantiated. In March 2024 the SEC settled charges against Delphia and Global Predictions for statements about their use of AI that the firms could not support, made on websites, in filings, in a press release and on social media, with $400,000 in combined penalties. Describe what the AI does, where people make the decisions, and keep the evidence in the same file as any other marketing claim.

How to Read the Tables

The Four-Gate Content Chain, the Audience–Rule Map and the Claim Ledger are this guide's own devices. The evidence table lists each source with the date the source itself shows and the evidence class it belongs to; "what it does not establish" marks the limit of each source, not a criticism. The SERP table describes each page as published in October 2026, in ranking order, with 6sense added because it targets the same audience. The worked example is invented and its numbers illustrate the reporting format only. Rule summaries are short restatements of the texts linked below and are not legal advice.
